The portrayal of a town on the very edge of the European Union and the collective identity of its residents. Cierna nad Tisou, once known as the “Golden Gate of Socialism”, has now become a run-down smugglers den on the Eastern periphery. The characters in this film find their own ways to navigate the dysfunctional system, often skittering along the edge of the law and common sense, but their stories are all the more genuine, expressive, and human.
This compelling, poetic documentary was a debut film by the director Maria Rumanova which has seen its premiere at the prestigious IDFA in Amsterdam.

Peter “Koza” Balaz is a former Olympic boxer, now forgotten and living in poverty with his pregnant girlfriend Misa, who presses Koza to find the necessary money for an abortion. Koza, out of other options, once again steps back into the ring, literally risking his life in the hope to earn some much-needed cash and possibly change Misa’s mind.
This docu-fiction hybrid from Ivan Ostrochovsky, bleak but infused with dark humour, inspired by and starring the real-life Roma boxer who competed in Atlanta 1996, is the director’s first venture into the fiction territory. The cinematography by Martin Kollar is reserved yet beautiful, with many long static shots, something you would not expect from a boxing drama.

Polish sci-fi movies are a rare hidden gems. Polish filmmakers, behind the Iron Curtain over years several times. Even Andrzej Wajda, a Polish Oscar winning director, made a shortmid-length film about transplantology about Richard Fox - race driver - whose organs were donated, which was a cause for insurance company to state that he is not fully dead.
80’ in Poland were one of the darkness time during Polish Communism. Filmmakers has made several sci-fi films, which were kind of escapism and reference to current situation in Poland. Films taught not only about totalitarianism, but also about violence and even a big fear of aliens.
One is a cult film in Poland, which we will also show in Cork - SEXMISSION (Seksmisja) which portray a gender apocalypse and follows two last man on the women earth. Another one is one of the best films of Piotr Szulkin - Polish sci-fi specialised director, who did THE WAR OF THE WARS: NEXT CENTURY (Wojna światów - następne stulecie), which is one of the darkest cult film inspired by Orwell’s universe.
