Slovak amateur video archives from 90ties, collected systematically  by the author since 2012, offer a view into the personal situation of post-revolutionary times in former Czechoslovakia.  Taken out of the original context, "film stripes" acquire a new perspective enabling a reflection on the amateur way of storytelling but also the content of the depicted reality.

New Talents, organized by Visegrad Animation Forum, is a project intended for alternative promotion of the most talented young animation filmmakers from Central and Eastern Europe. Its aim is to present internationally the 11 best films made by students and debuting artists in a given year to a professional audience and for the general public. The selection of the films focuses on extraordinary talents whose work promises successful future careers. The project counts on the presentation of this compilation at selected European animated film festivals and to draw attention to new talents and bring them together with experienced foreign producers.

Sat: Camden Palace Hotel: 20:00

For the first time ever we have put together a selection of short films made in Ireland by filmmakers born in one of the Visegrad countries. This will create yet another connection between Emerald Isle and the Visegrad Four. We are hoping to build on this relationship and explore it further in the future. Immigration got this very negative label in recent years and we are hoping to show that immigration can lead to collaborations and creation of something new in taking the best from the host country and the home country of the people. Our selection has a wide range of themes and genres this year from comedy to horror, from documentary to an experimental film there is even a music video. Some of our filmmakers include Aleksander Szeser, Roksana Bursztynowicz, Witold Koprucki and Krzysztof Kolodzinski.

We then see the body of the dead or dying Szindbád lying in a cart drawn by a horse through the countryside, where nobody any longer seems interested in him. "The smell of burnt rubber, clouds of smoke, suede upholstery and the roar of the engine are at the centre of Rada's world. All of his days are spent in pretty much the same way: repairing the engine of his beat-up Ford or looking for work in nearby factories. But the nights are for booming tuning festivals. Though he usually loses in the parade, the darkness momentarily disguises the imperfections of his car and the even greater imperfections in his life. Against the backdrop of Northern Bohemia, a region with high unemployment and infamous anti-Roma marches, Martin Dusek's film presents a melancholy picture of an aimless generation of young people."

Czechia/2015

"What happens in the mountains, stays in the mountains no matter what those down in the valleys may do. Picturesque characters play out their mountain-bound parts. The true spice of the Giant Mountains are the locals, those who live there no matter what season. A one-legged skier, a snow cat operator that doesn’t drink on the Day of the Three Wise Men, a legendary womanizer who is also sterile, a bartender that doubles as a psychic. And Pavka, the oldest living member of the Bulán family, a family with a long tradition of cross-country skiing. He is worried about his son, Jura, who rather than train for the “Fifty” cross-country race chases other “fifties”. He is obsessed with older women, keeping their souls (and bodies) warm. Jura will most probably not finish the race once again, as Jan Hilský, one of the skiers, brings along his mother."

Homo Ciris

"Told with light a touch and gentle words, this humorous film straddling the line between documentary and fiction takes a loving look at the story of an old man who devoted his life to aquarium fish and dreams of entering the underwater world. “Those who want, find a way. Those who don’t, find a reason.”

Long rows of aquariums, spawning pools, and tubs of colourful fish or fish resembling spaghetti, all in an eerie, artificially lit atmosphere. The kingdom of Homo Ciris teems with the beauty of never-ending amazement."

documentary/ 50 min.
Slovak republic, Czechia/2016

"The protagonist of this quiet picture is the director’s 52-year-old brother Ján Kollár, who learns that he needs to undergo a hazardous procedure with only a 50-50 chance of surviving. Ján takes his bike and a minimum of equipment and sets out on perhaps the last journey he’ll ever take when he can essentially do everything exactly the way he wants. The only limitation is the day set for his operation – October 5th. With its refined imaging, the visually precise movie bears witness to the physical and spiritual wanderings of a man in a crucial life situation. Employing sensitivity without pathos, the director records Ján’s struggle against fear and his sincere effort to stand face-to-face with his circumstances and find reconciliation. Ján commits his thoughts and feelings to a journal, excerpts of which serve as a formal element in this contemplative, powerful film."

Their perspective of the world is in many ways much more essential and sincere, and it often reveals the “invisible dimensions” of the world. This film brings four unique stories about love among the blind and the various forms it can take."

Documentary/ 79 min.
Poland/2014

"Eugeniusz Rudnik revolutionized the idea of music itself with a pair of scissors and a magnetic tape. As part of the legendary Experimental Studio of Polish Radio, he revealed hidden value in rough and rejected sounds long before the rise of the DJs. In an era of  electronic music created in a workshop resembling a scientific lab, he composed music to reach and to portray other human beings.
‘15 Corners of the World’ is an attempt to hear the vision of his music. Following the rhythms of architecture, the human body, and the throbbing pulse of nature we discover a new reality. We touch the sound.
Moving images reveal a miracle that emerged in the age of tape recorders and disappeared with the advent of computers. They express the wonder of the analogue era – the urge to experiment, to discover new territory, explore the borderlands, and constantly search for  new means of expression."

with Eva Pa and 16 mm film

Film is more than just a virtual moving picture; it’s an elastic material perforated on both edges and coated with a light-sensitive emulsion that captures images. This isn’t common knowledge anymore. At the workshop Cut Your Own, everyone can get a hands-on look at the film editing process. And the reward will be your very own collective film, officially screened at Visegrad Film Festival with live music.

What is the workshop with about?
